Ways of Being, Ways of Talk has recently been published by the Department of Education, Western Australia (http://www.eddept.wa.edu.au/centoff/esl/esd1.htm). It is a fabulous resource, made possible through the ABC Two-Way Literacy and Learning project - a collaborative project of the Department of Education WA and the Centre for Applied Language and Literacy Research, Edith Cowan University. It is funded jointly by the Department of Education WA and the Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training.

The resource kit contains four videos and a book, produced with the aim of enhancing awareness of educators who are working with Aboriginal clients about Aboriginal English - a dialect spoken by many Aboriginal Australians.

This resource kit is beautifully designed and presented. It is user friendly, yet full of substantive and helpful information. Section 1 offers a clear user's guide and overview of content. Section 2 contains the video scripts which are produced in such a way that informative insights can be easily retrieved and used. Section 3 provides the background papers - these again, are presented with clarity and visuals bring the concepts to life.

We highly recommend this resource. It goes far beyond descriptions of specific differences in language use, to explorations of dimensions of meaning, values, beliefs and world views that language represents. In this way it offers not only an invaluable framework for learning more about Aboriginal 'ways of being and ways of talking', but also clear insights about taking on a 'two way' approach to learning. Definitely take this one out of its box!

Breakthrough in Achieving Literacy for Aboriginal Students

A report of the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, Dr David Kemp's visit to the Wiltja Annex of Woodville High School in Adelaide where teachers have been able to achieve a 100% success rate for all Indigenous students involved in the outstandingly successful Strategic Results Project (SRP) "Scaffolding Literacy" project.

Clearinghouse for Children's Literacy Education Research

The Clearinghouse provides public access to the products of research funded by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs' (DETYA) Literacy and Numeracy Programme: Grants for National Literacy and Numeracy Strategies and Projects.

CECLER: Bilingual Interface Project

The project examined the interface between students' first language (L1) and English (L2) as they learn English in the context of schooling. The completed report contains eight sub-project reports undertaken across six universities and research centres in Australia. The Literature Review draws together the threads which run through the eight projects so that particular issues can be picked up in the Literature Review and followed through the various projects.

CECLER: Classroom Discourse Project

This study report addresses the role of talk in student learning and as a goal for learning in its own right. The work was carried out in two strands each employing its own methodological approaches. In the first strand the teachers worked for two years with an educational researcher to explore the uses of talk in classroom and schools serving socially, culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

CECLER: Community Literacy Practices and Schooling

This study explored the differences in language and literacy practices of schools, families and community groups, and examines the impact that any differences may have on students' school success. The report presents detailed analysis of family, community and school contexts, that focused on twenty families with children in primary and secondary schools. Further, the innovative practices of four case study schools are detailed as they attempt to create school curricular and learning environments that meet the need of specific students.

CECLER: Desert Schools: An Investigation of English Language and Literacy Among Young Aboriginal People in Seven Communities

The project researched patterns and levels in the use of English and aspects of Aboriginal languages in a range of contexts in seven communities in the central desert region. The study identifies recently implemented educational strategies designed to improve outcomes in literacy and language education and addresses issues in curriculum development and teacher professional development for these teaching contexts.
